Prologue
The day was a miserable one; clouds filled the sky dark and ominous, rain would poor down periodically, then drizzle for hours on in making the day seem worse than what it really was. It has been like this for weeks now, rivers have flooded, farm crops have drowned and so have many people. No one knows why it rains so; some think it is punishment from the gods for not revering them. Many have stopped worshipping them, believing they have turned there backs on the world. Plaques and wars have ravaged the lands for many years now, and no amount of praying saved anyone from it. Some believe that it is a test by the gods and that the rain is a part of that test. However, no one is quite sure what the test is or why they are being punished. Nevertheless, many have given up faith because of the events, other the exact opposite, taking up faith to try to save their souls. Even the Ancients, wisest and oldest of all the magic users in the world, good, evil, neutral it did not matter; they all made up the council of Ancients, have a theory that this is really a part of the major war going on between Malaki, god of the dead, and Hytherine, god of the pure. Their theory is the closet out of any other. The two gods were at war with each other over who would get to rule the world. Hytherine did not want to fight, but when Malaki started cause dilemma in the world, Hytherine had to step in and intervene. The war heated up very quickly, only after fighting amongst themselves for a few months, they drug the other gods into it, and soon the world was caught up in their war.
Right now, the war is waging between numerous armies. However, only two are big enough to matter. The Dark Army, led by a mysterious cloaked figure, and the Allied Army, led by numerous people. Along with these two colossal armies are diminutive armies. Either formed in cities that do not want to choose sides, or formed by mercenaries and bandits. Usually these armies use guerilla tactics to fight, since they are so minute compared with the main armies of this war. The Dark Army hires these little armies to fight for them, or along side with them, and if the army they want refuses they attack it and slaughter everyone in the army. The Allied Army tries to do the same but if they are refused they do nothing about it, but they do tell them what it will cost them when they are attack and plead for help. The Allied army just sits back and watches, why help someone that does not want to help you, they say to themselves. That usually convinces some to join them, or at least consider joining them.
In the Dark army you have, Black Orcs, Cyclops, Dark Elves, Evil Dragons, Giants, Goblins, Hellhounds, Hobgoblins, Humans, Minotaurs, Ogres, Orcs, Trolls, Werewolves, Vampires, Demons, and Elemental Demons. Many more also are in the Dark Army, but these are the important ones, the main ones if you will. Now the Dark Army has several more men then the Allied Army has, but with greater numbers comes greater problems. In addition, evil always destroys itself.
In the Allied Army you have, Centaurs, Good Dragons, Dwarves, Gnomes, Great Eagles, Griffins, High Elves, Hippogriffs, Humans, Phoenixes, Wood elves, Sand Elves, and Angeles. Even though the Allied army is smaller in numbers, they are stronger heart. The army fights for peace, and for keeping the countless lives alive. They have been trained better then the Dark Army, and in some battles, a minute battalion of soldiers would overpower a regiment of Dark Army soldiers.
On one such battle, a small battalion of elves was cut off from the rest of the Allied Army. They began to retreat towards a Fortress the Dwarves had built and named Thorvarin Fortress. It was built deep in the Varg Mountains. Three sides of the fortress are protected by the mountains. Only one side is actually stone built by dwarves. Since it was built by Dwarves, master crafters of stone, it is an impenetrable wall. In addition to being well built it also has many tunnels leading away from the fortress for escaping it if need be. A river flows by it and drains into a lake, which is used for the fortress water supply; food, clothing, armor, and weapons are easily shipped in by the tunnels. The battalion of elves, remembering the stories told about this fortress, retreat to it trying to escape the Dark Army regiment. There a battle between the two forces rages for twenty years. The Dark Army greatly outnumbers the elves, but the elves have the advantage in defense.
“Get the archers up on the walls!” Shouted Dargthe, commander of the battalion. The archers hurriedly ran up the stairs to the top of the wall.
“Don’t Fire until I have given the command!” Dargthe bellowed. He then positioned the rest of his battalion to the best of his abilities. The Dark Army led by a cloaked figure held their position, which was a couple hundred yards away. Dargthe was not going to make the first move. They could hold their position until helped arrived, but he had no clue when that would be, or if anyone actually new they were here or not.
The battle finally started when one of the orcs in the Dark Army got tired of waiting and fired an arrow. The arrow missed the elves, but just barley. Right after that arrow was fired the elves released their strings. Hundreds of arrows whizzed through the sky, then came falling down on the Dark Army. Each arrow hit someone in the Dark Army, no arrow was wasted. This type of fighting went on for a full day. First one side would fire, and then the other side would fire. Soon, however, both sides ran out of arrows and had to wait again for the other side to make the first move. Both sides waited for years, but what is truly amazing is that no one came to either’s aid. Finally, the Dark Army began to advance. They used their two giants to batter the portcullises open. Once they had done that, an epic battle took place. A mere five hundred elves battled some ten thousand ogres, orcs, goblins, and even the elves dark counter parts the dark elves. The battle raged on for more then fifth teen years. The elves would push back the attack, then the Dark Army would charge forward sending the Elves into a retreat. The Elves would then use their magic user along side with their sword men and pike men to keep the Dark Army at bay. Finally, after twenty long atrocious years, the battle was over. The Dark Army had won the battle, but not before losing a third of their army in the process.
After the battle, the Dark Army planned to take control of the Fortress. However, upon hearing that one of the main armies, hearing of the Battalion in need was on its way to help, the Dark Army fled before the other army could reach them. The Dark Army found one of the main armies and joined up with them. The commanders, not wanting to be punished for losing so many against a force so little, exaggerated the size of the army they were fighting, and told their superiors that it was a miracle they won against such an immense force. What the true miracle was, was that they convinced their superiors and stayed alive for it.
As for the poor souls who lost theirs lives of the Fortress, their comrades came to discover no one left alive and after staying there for a few weeks discovered that some of the elves spirits that battled here still roamed the fortress. They left hurriedly when strange occurrence. They reported to their commanders that no one was left alive, and that something weird has happened to the fortress and it should be forgotten.
The general asked for the full details, and when the commander gave them to him, he agreed. Soon both armies forgot about the fortress. They would send troops there and when strange things started to happen or when some of the men would mysteriously disappear the commanders would leave and report about the strange things occurring there.
Story: Chapter 1
Now fifty years later the war is still being raged by the two armies and the little armies. Near the great city of Haigul, the two armies are battling. The Dark Amy is trying to take control of the city and the Allied Army is defending it. The Dark Army is led by a cloaked figure, and the Allied Army is led by a cloaked figure as well.
“Kyros! We just received word on how many men the other army has.” Said a scout sent to spy on the Dark Army.
“Well lets here it.” Kyros said calmly from the back of his hood. HE was the commander of this small regiment, and everyone respected him. He not only knew how to organize affective battle plans, but he also fought along side with everyone. He was not one of those commanders that sat in the back issuing orders to everyone and doing nothing himself. No, Kyros fought along side his men, using his magic to defeat enemies and protect his men.
“Last report states they have approximately 100 orcs, 30 ogres, around 35 Minotaurs, 2 giants, about 60 goblins, and 40 hobgoblins, and about 40 each of trolls and Cyclops, then they have around 50 demons under their control, and about 15 werewolves. There was also spotted about 25 Dark Calvary.” Dark Calvary is men spawned from the shadows who ride horses of black color, generally all their weapons are poisoned and wear black robes, no one has ever seen the true face of a Dark Calvary, or if they have they would not be able to tell anyone, for when you see ones face you go mad. “They also have siege weaponry; I think we saw about three trebuchets, and one battering ram. We also discovered that their commander is a Vampire. Sir we thought Vampires went extinct years ago.” The scout gave all his information while looking at a piece of paper.
“So did I.” Kyros said then turned to another scout. “Relay this information to the General, and tell him that their commander is a vampire.” Kyros told the scout his orders. “This could mean big problems if vampires are still alive.” Kyros said to himself. He then turned to someone in the tent.
“How many men do we have?” He asked them in a serious tone.
“We have about 150 archers, 100 swords men, and about 50 pike men. We have three trebuchets as well, along with two battering rams.” The person read the short list quickly. It was true that they were out numbered, but they were better trained. “We also received reports that reinforcements are heading are way.”
“How long will it take them to reach us?” Kyros asked looking up at the man for the first time.
“They said about a week.” He said quietly
“A week! We’ll all be dead by then!” Kyros shouted, not meaning too. “Bring me some maps. We’ll have to find somewhere, where we can hold the enemy off.” Kyros order one of his servants.
As he was brought maps, he began looking through them. There were some good fortresses, but all of them were to far away to reach. Finally, Kyros’s eyes scanned over a certain spot in one of the maps.
“There in the Varg Mountains.” Kyros put a finger on the spot on the map. “What fortress is that?” He asked one of his council members.
“That would be the Thorvarin Fortress sir. It’s supposed to be abandoned.” Said one of the men.
“Well that fortress is the closet one to us. We’re heading there, inform the men.” Kyros ordered. He then turned and walked out or the tent, making sure his head was covered completely by his hood.
The men gathered their supplies and began preparations for travel. They would have to let this city fall, but in doing so, Kyros knew the Dark Army would come after him. They would not dare pass up the chance to pursue the Great Arch Mage, as the Dark Army called Kyros. It would take Kyros’s and his regiment a day or two to reach the Fortress. It would most likely take the Dark Army; after they have realized their enemy has retreated and that the city was theirs. In addition, after the commanders have rounded up their troops from raping and pillaging the city, it would take them about a week or two to catch up. By then Kyros would have, the Fortress fortified enough to repel the army.
They began to march a steady pace, trying to put as much distance between themselves and the Dark Army. About after a days travel the Fortress came into view. It was dark and covered in shadows. Some parts of the main wall had fallen and would have to be repaired quickly. Kyros would not be able to tell how much repair would need to be done until they were inside the fortress. However, from where he was, the fortress was vast and forbidding. Kyros knew that this fortress would save their lives. He wondered why the Allied Army never told him about it.
The troops slowly made their way inside, not trusting the way the fortress looked, or felt to them. Many were restless when they entered it. Kyros took a tour around the fortress and gave commands on how to repair and fortify it.
