The lights dim in the street lamps. A small sigh slips through my lips as the sun rises onto the east side of England. The wind picks up and blows opposite of the rising sun. I shove my hands into the pockets of my pants as an old church comes into view. My eyes sparkle with interest as I come nearer and nearer, seeing the broken stained glass windows and the large doors in front. The large bell tower at the top with at least ten bells in a row, swaying ever so gently. The large woven ropes swaying to and fro along with the bells. The gray cement stairs leading up to the brown doors. Carved into them was the virgin Mary. I climb the steps up to the doors and push with might and the doors creak open ever so slowly. It’s cold. I walk up the isle of the church, in the middle of all the pews. Old bibles, a hot or two, tissues along the floor and all of it covered with a slight layer of dust. The wind whispers through the shattered windows and the sun leaks.
I walk up to the front of the large dust covered room. Candle holders, a podium, a statue of Mary, dried flowers. I take three steps up the small stairs and look over to my right to see the choir’s seats. The sound is ever to faint but I can hear it. The choir singing Hallelujah over and over. The preacher speaks, walking around, looking at his bible every so often.
“Wow.” I say, looking around at it all.
“Son, you can have a seat now.” The preacher pats my shoulder and gives me a small push. The choir stops singing and some of the girls my age snicker. I look dazed for a minute then sit down in the front row. No dust flies up. All I feel is the soft red cushion under me. The girl next to me snickers a bit. I still look dazed.
She waves her hand in front of my face. “Hello?” She whispers in my ear. “Anyone home?” Her short blonde hair falls forward. Her bright green eyes sparkle. I look around at the church.
“Heh…Hey wait! You weren’t here a minute ago!” I whisper. My English accent kicks in.
“What? Silly! Yes I was. I’ve been here all morning!” Her soft pink lips move into a smiling position on her fair skinned face.
“Why was I up there?” I asked her quietly in her ear, leaning over a bit.
“Am I you? I think you just spaced out again.” She giggled.
“What? I didn’t space out! Who are you anyway?” I asked after the preacher finished his sermon.
She stood. Her crimson dress flailing at the middle of her thighs as she did so. “Alice. You should know that.”
“Alice…” I repeated. “I’m Jack.”
“I know!” She holds out her hand to me. “C’mon!” She still held out her white gloved hand to me.
“Where?” I ask Alice as I take her hand. She yanks me up out of the soft pew seat. My eyes open wide. Not only was she a babe, but the whole church was un-dusted, the windows weren’t broken and, it was clean. Light glowed from the candles. The choir was singing softly as people began to leave. The large bells at the top of the church began to ring.
I looked down at myself and my heart almost jumped off a cliff. I was all dressed for church. Long black pants and brown dress shoes. My white button up collar shirt was covered with a blue sweater vest. My messy light brown hair was still messy. It looked best that way. “I wasn’t wearing this earlier…” I muttered. Alice rolled her eyes. I really wasn’t. A black long sleeve shirt, jeans ripped in the knees, converse, a red beanie and, my red vest over my black shirt.
I slip off the sweater vest and un-button the white shirt a little bit that way the collar stuck out a bit. Leaving the blue vest on the pew Alice takes me upstairs to the roof of the church. There was a small deck like place at the top of the church under the bell tower. It overlooked the while town. The brown roofs, the horse carriages and the old cars.
Alice leaned over on the edge of the beams guarding the edge of the platform. The sun shone and the warm wind picked up. Alice smiled.
“This is my favorite place to be. It’s perfect. Absolutely perfect.” She smiled as the wind blew her blonde hair and crimson dress a bit. I looked her up and down. The top of her dress was mesh down until at least three inches of her cheast. The rest was just red cloth down until her mid thighs. She was plain, but beautiful. I walked over to the edge and stood next to her, letting the wind blow my messy ear length light brown hair.
“Yeah, It’s is perfect.” I smiled and let the wind and sun feel my body.
